FROM THE GROENE KALEBAS JAZZ CLUB TO A COMFORTABLE ROOF TERRACE

This two-family house from 1675 was originally part of ‘t Noortsche Bos, a neighbourhood with about three hundred weavers’ homes, designed by architect Philip Vingboons. The basement has served many purposes, of which the best-known and undoubtedly the most detrimental to the premises was its stint as the Groene kalebas jazz club. The monument had become so dilapidated, that the entire frame had to be dismantled. We dredged the basement and laid new foundations. Upstairs we performed consolidating restorations on the beams, trusses, gables, window and door frames and ceilings. Finally, we divided the interior into four residences, spread out over two storeys and featuring an eat-in kitchen, living room and two bedrooms. Between the two upper dwellings a passage covered by a flat roof connects the front and rear sections. The purpose is easy to guess: a covered roof terrace offering a dazzling view of the city.
