COLOURFUL MERCHANT’S HOUSE

How to rearrange a narrow house with a width of less than 3 ½ meters for living, working, studying, making music, sleeping, washing, and cooking? This design uses sightlines and circulation around the stairwell on each floor to provide a sense of space and benefit everyday use. The theme is sleeping and making music at the rear and living with canal side views at the front. The largest architectural interventions were the relocation of the kitchen and bathrooms. The bathrooms serve the two adjoining bedrooms on the top floors. All oak laminate floors have been replaced with pine floorboards. The dilapidated garden house from 1999, which has no listed status, has largely been renewed. Add to this the colour choices of the client and you have a wonderful Amsterdam jewel.
